Solar when CenterPoint delivers your power.

Your bill names the delivery utility. The steps below are what CenterPoint's page describes, and the roof comes first.

Is CenterPoint your delivery utility?

Look for CenterPoint next to the delivery charges on your bill. Your bill is the authority on who serves your home. If another company, a cooperative or a city utility is named, see the utilities directory instead.

Connecting and permission steps

CenterPoint's page says the installer applies, followed by a design review, construction, a final review and permission to operate.

CenterPoint handles the connection, the permission and the meter; your retail electric provider handles buying and selling energy on your bill, and buyback offers vary by provider.

Roof readiness before solar

Panels stay on the roof for many years. An in-person check of the roof covering, the decking and the flashing comes before any design. See check the roof before panels.

Documents to gather

Questions to ask

  1. Has someone checked my roof in person, and does it need work before panels go on?
  2. Which way does the roof face, what shades it, and how long is it likely to stay in service before work is needed?
  3. Who submits the application to CenterPoint, and who tells me when written permission to operate arrives?
  4. Which retail electric provider plan are your numbers based on, and what does it pay or credit for exported energy?
  5. Which charges on my bill stay the same with solar?
  6. Who removes and reinstalls panels if the roof needs work later, and who pays?
